Gangster Squad doesn't overload you with a back story, although the director does a great job of building a world for the characters to inhabit. Sean Penn makes a solid, nuanced bad guy and the titular gangster squad strikes a good balance between funny and badass. Ryan Gosling does his Ryan Gosling thing and Josh Brolin certainly makes for a fantastic hard nosed cop. Have already recommended the movie to several friends.
