The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was on par with any of the Lord of the Rings movies. It featured the same wide, sweeping shots, frantic action scenes, excellent pacing, and all around great acting as the movies that came before it. Peter Jackson and crew did a great job in capturing the lighthearted and somewhat silly tone of the book, while (generally) keeping it from becoming too campy. On a technical level, the effects were very impressive, but did not overwhelm the story.
